专业概况

Pre-Professional Studies are designed for students planning to pursue further study at a professional school. Students are encouraged to meet with an advisor as soon as possible to discuss course selection, to gather information regarding admission requirements for professional schools, and to select an appropriate undergraduate major. Please note that Pre-Professional Studies are NOT majors, an EMU degree will not be awarded.

Students planning on pursuing a career in the medical field can complete course requirements at EMU for admission to medicine, optometry, podiatry, veterinary, and chiropractic programs.

Selecting undergraduate courses to prepare for medical school can be daunting. Many Michigan medical schools no longer require any specific courses, but have general requirements. While many Ohio medical schools require general course sequences. However, all medical schools expect a thorough understanding biology, chemistry, human behavior, and mathematics including physics. Most pre-medical students, therefore, select a science major, although this is not mandatory. It is recommended that students continue to take humanities courses. Before applying to medical school students should complete volunteer work, participate in student leadership, and gain experience working with patients.

The Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) is required for medical school admission. This test should be taken after prerequisites in biology, chemistry, physics, and behavioral sciences are completed. Most students take the MCAT in the spring or summer after their Junior or Senior years. Applications are to be submitted in June.

Each allopathic and osteopathic medical school establishes its own admission requirements. Students should investigate the requirements of the schools in which they are interested. All medical schools value passion, personal integrity, perseverance, and curiosity. Pre-medical students should select a major that prepares them for medical school curricula and while fitting their personality and passions.

Students interested in pursuing Physician Assistant studies should be aware that, unlike medical school, PA schools do have specific course requirements. PA programs also require typically require the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and have clinical work experience requirements.

All new Pre-professional students should attend the Pre-Med/Vet Orientation given at the beginning of the Fall and Winter semesters and regularly consult with the Pre-Med advisor. Students seeking to participate in either the Logan or Palmer Chiropractic articulations should meet with the Program coordinator/advisor during their first month of class.
