专业概况

The film degree program examines film as one of the dominant art forms of our time, posing all of the moral, aesthetic, ideological, perceptual and epistemological questions important to a modern humanities education. Film majors will become acquainted with film's forms, techniques, significant movements, and criticism, and explore film as a cultural force—learning how films intersect with religion, politics, race, gender, values, and globalization.

Film Degree

The film major consists of a broad range of courses related to the history, theory, social impact, and the production of cinema and digital media arts. Film students gain skills in critical analysis and writing that can be useful for a broad range of career paths in the arts industry and beyond. Students who choose the digital media production emphasis will receive hands-on, practical experience in production techniques preparing them for an immediate career in the cinematic arts.

Learning Outcomes

Students graduating with a bachelor’s degree in film studies will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the critical and technical language associated with film studies, including genres, classic narrative form and non-narrative forms, mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, sound, and modes of screen reality. Demonstrate their critical thinking and analytical skills appropriate to the discipline of film studies. Demonstrate their ability to employ research skills, including the use of appropriate print and technology sources in the discipline. Demonstrate their public presentation and listening skills. Demonstrate their ability to articulate, through close reading and writing, their own worldviews. They will be able to explain and respond thoughtfully to the religious, social, ideological, spiritual, moral, and ethical values implied in film texts through their close readings and reflections.
