The achievements of our ancient ancestors, as well as the challenges they encountered and the ways in which they responded to such challenges, provide valuable lessons for each and every one of us. With a broad and rich understanding of ancient times, we can better understand who we are today and where we are going in the future.

Macquarie's world-leading ancient history course – the longest-running and broadest of its kind in Australia – allows you to immerse yourself in the culture and languages of the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern world, both on campus and at archaeological dig sites overseas.

KEY FEATURES

• The study of ancient artefacts, including papyri, inscriptions, ceramics and coins, is fully integrated into this degree through the resources of the Macquarie University Museum of History.
• You can study ancient Egypt and the Near East, classical Greece and Rome, and late Roman and early Byzantine history. You can expand your horizons to include the study of Persia and Iran, as well as the transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages.
• You'll have opportunities to pursue your own research interests.
• This is the only degree in Australia offering a full study of Egyptology from the Predynastic to Coptic periods.
• You'll undertake an internship in Public History and Cultural Heritage as part of your degree.
• A full suite of training is offered in ancient languages. You can choose to take minors in two ancient languages (Ancient Greek, Egyptian Hieroglyphs and Latin) or choose to study other ancient languages (Ancient Hebrew and/or Coptic). All are offered from beginner levels.
• Contemporary issues are explored, including the ethics of studying the past and the role of the past in the present – for example the legal and illegal trade in antiquities.

To apply for an undergraduate program, international students will need to have completed one or more of the following academic qualifications: A recognized senior secondary school qualification or university entrance examination, such as the New South Wales Higher School Certificate (NSW HSC) or other equivalent Australian or overseas high school qualification; A recognized university Foundation course; A recognized 2 or 3-year Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree; At least one year of a university degree from a recognized institution. IELTS of 6.5 overall with minimum 6.0 in each band, or equivalent.
