Boost your engineering prowess with advanced skills in mathematics, and prepare the groundwork for a research higher degree.

This dual program will provide you with the skills to apply advanced mathematics to engineering fields, as well as the core background to enter a research-preparation honours degree in mathematics.

Over the course of this 5-year program you'll complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and supplement your studies with additional courses from the mathematics program.

You'll graduate with exceptional skills, ready for an exciting career as an engineer. Depending on your choice of major you could work in a range of fields, from infrastructure and hospitals to energy and software. Studying the mathematics program in parallel will boost your engineering prowess and also open pathways to further higher study, such as honours in mathematics.

UQ is home to the largest number of engineering study options in Queensland. Choose from chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronic engineering or software engineering, with the option to complement your specialisation with a major in one of the new and emerging areas of engineering.

You'll graduate with two respected qualifications, and advanced knowledge and skills that will set you apart in a competitive job market.

Geotechnical Engineering

Understanding and predicting the behaviour of soil and rock as earth materials is imperative for creating safe, sustainable and economical civil engineering solutions.

Geotechnical engineers apply scientific principles and engineering methods for developing civil engineering infrastructure on the surface and within the ground including prediction, mitigation and prevention of geological hazards.

The major in geotechnical engineering is unique in Australia and designed to meet the demands of mining companies, geotechnical consultations and construction managers, who look for graduates with a qualification in geotechnical engineering.

The courses offered as part of this major will extend fundamental knowledge of the geotechnics of soils and rock to explore more complex processes, such as those associated with tunnels, mining operations, dams, roads, underground structures and waste management facilities.

State-of-the-art teaching and laboratory facilities combined with world-leading lectures and strong industry engagement will provide graduates of this major with a strong foundation from which they can contribute immediately to geotechnical engineering projects in industry.

To be offered a place in an undergraduate program, you need to have successfully completed Queensland Year 12, or a qualification equivalent to Queensland Year 12, with the required minimum entry score for the program you're interested in studying. English Language Scores: IELTS: Overall Band Score of 6.5 AND a minimum score of 6 in each sub-band of Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening; TOEFL (Internet-Based-iBT): Overall score 87 with a Writing score of 21 and Reading, Speaking and Listening scores of 19; TOEFL (Paper-based): Overall score of 570 and a minimum score of 5.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE) and 54 in Listening and Reading; PTE: Overall score of 64 with 60 in each communicative skills section; CAE/CPE: Overall Cambridge English Scale (CES) score of 176 with a minimum score of 169 in each skill; BE: A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all four macro skills.
