Kick-start your research career and open doors to postgraduate studies by undertaking an honours year in science, specialising in plant science or animal and veterinary bioscience.

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) program provides you with the opportunity to pursue an independent research project in an area that interests you under the supervision of an academic staff member.

UQ is the leading university in Australia for agriculture, and you can select projects covering the plant or animal sciences at UQ Gatton. The campus houses production animals, horticultural fields, a plant nursery, post-harvest facilities, research laboratories and greenhouses, a wildlife facility, specialist veterinary and equine hospitals, and some of the best animal teaching facilities in the Southern Hemisphere.

During your honours study year, you'll be provided with a grounding in research methodology and then focus the remainder of your time on your project. You'll acquire skills which will enable you to work without close supervision in a research environment in industry or government, or proceed to a higher degree by research.

Plant Science

Help solve two of the biggest problems facing humans today: food security and our dependency on fossil fuels.

You’ll learn the science behind breeding high-yielding, pest-resistant crops to help farmers increase their productivity.

Study courses such as ecology, plant pathology, plant physiology and plant biotechnology. Apply your scientific knowledge to use plant-based sources to develop biofuels, medicines or healthier food products.

Studying plant science can lead to rewarding career opportunities as a researcher, consultant or teacher with multinational companies, universities or government departments.

To be offered a place in an undergraduate program, you need to have successfully completed Queensland Year 12, or a qualification equivalent to Queensland Year 12, with the required minimum entry score for the program you're interested in studying. English Language Scores: IELTS: Overall Band Score of 6.5 AND a minimum score of 6 in each sub-band of Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening; TOEFL (Internet-Based-iBT): Overall score 87 with a Writing score of 21 and Reading, Speaking and Listening scores of 19; TOEFL (Paper-based): Overall score of 570 and a minimum score of 5.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE) and 54 in Listening and Reading; PTE: Overall score of 64 with 60 in each communicative skills section; CAE/CPE: Overall Cambridge English Scale (CES) score of 176 with a minimum score of 169 in each skill; BE: A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all four macro skills.
