Requirements for the Degree

The PhD in English is granted when students have: (1) completed at least 15 courses (45 credit hours) if admitted with a BA and 10 courses (30 credits) if admitted with an MA; (2) demonstrated either (a) an ability to read and work in one language other than English or (b) the acquisition of a skill or body of knowledge important to the student’s doctoral project; (3) passed the Qualifying and the PhD Specialty exam; (4) completed and successfully defended the doctoral project.

Students who wish to leave the program and receive an MA degree must successfully pass the Qualifying Exam, complete a total of 10 courses (including the required courses in the program- ENGL 600, ENGL 684 and ENGL 688), complete at least one course in American Literature and one course in British Literature, and earn at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

为来自中国的学生设计 Applicants to a University of Delaware graduate program must possess (or be in the final year of completing) a U.S. equivalent bachelor’s degree. The University requires an official paper-based TOEFL score of at least 550 or at least 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) for an applicant to be considered for admission. The University expects a minimum score of 18 on the Internet-based Speaking Test. IELTS score - 6.5.
